Service Description

Using ultrasound to image the thorax gives the clinician several advantages over using traditional radiographic imaging. Lung consolidation, lung tumours or mediastinal tumours can be assessed. Ultrasound examination of the pleural cavity is also more sensitive in differentiating pleural fluid from pleural thickening or pleural masses. Determining the location of the pleural fluid increases the likelihood of a successful thoracocentesis and reduces the risk of pneumothorax.
